Dear Students
Week 12, Spring 2026
It has been four score days since last we convened. Or something like that.
This week, you will be writing letters. To anyone you want, about anything you want. The only caveat: I, of course, and probably some of your classmates, will also be reading them. So keep that in mind.
Perhaps you may be thinking to yourself: why write a letter? Let us consider some reasons:
To share news or updates
To request information or clarification
To apply for something
To make a complaint or report an issue
To give instructions or directions
To express love or affection
To apologize or seek forgiveness
To offer condolences or sympathy
To reconnect after time apart
To say goodbye
To persuade or argue a position
To advocate for a cause or person
To confess something difficult or hidden
To reflect or bear witness1
If you are struggling to think of something to write about, I will share with you a small piece of wisdom that I have gathered over the last couple of decades of teaching: everybody always wants to hear about food.
And if you are still struggling to think of something to write about, here are six strange and/or interesting videos for you consider, write about, or use as springboards to figure out a different thing to write about:
